Denmark Joins NATO Plan to Develop Common 155mm Ammunition

Danish defense minister Troels Lund Poulsen has signed an updated letter of intent for Denmark to join a NATO initiative aimed at developing a uniform design for 155mm artillery ammunition.

The agreement, dated November 16, forms part of the High Visibility Project (HVP), which seeks to create a grenade that can be used across several fire support systems.

Poulsen said Denmark’s ongoing expansion of its armed forces includes deeper cooperation with NATO partners.

According to the Danish Ministry of Defense, experience from the war in Ukraine has demonstrated that the ability to use fire support ammunition across different systems supports more efficient use of available stockpiles, especially in operations against Russia. NATO members participating in the project aim to establish a generic 155mm grenade design to meet this requirement.

Norway, Finland, and Sweden have also joined the initiative. Poulsen said the project could reinforce regional defense cooperation.

The ministry stated that Denmark’s participation is expected to improve its ability to meet NATO’s need for increased artillery ammunition production.
