Poland on December 18 declared full operational readiness of a Patriot-equipped air defense unit under the Wisła program, formally integrating it into the country’s national and allied air defense structure.

The announcement was made at the 3rd Warsaw Air Defense Missile Brigade in Sochaczew, where the 37th Air Defense Missile Squadron was certified ready for operational duty. The ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, U.S. Ambassador to Poland Thomas Rose, Deputy Chief of the Armaments Agency Brigadier General Michał Marciniak, and senior Polish Armed Forces commanders.

“This is a historic moment. I just received a report of the full readiness of the Patriot system at the 37th Air Defense Missile Squadron,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said, calling the milestone the implementation of the Wisła program, which combines anti-missile, anti-aircraft, and counter-drone capabilities into a single, integrated air defense system.

Wisła represents the most expensive component of Poland’s defense architecture and is funded by Polish taxpayers.

The 37th Squadron’s Full Operational Capability concludes the first phase of the Wisła program. Earlier this month, the unit completed combat training evaluations covering command, control, and engagement functions required for its operational role. Certification allows the squadron to re-enter the national combat readiness system using Patriot-based counter-air capabilities.

Central to the system is the Integrated Air and Missile Defense Battle Command System, or IBCS, which connects sensors, radars, and launchers across platforms. “We are building integrated air defense because it cannot be otherwise,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said, stressing that the system is designed to counter drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and hostile aircraft through centralized decision-making and distributed engagement.

The defense minister confirmed that additional Wisła units are scheduled for delivery to Bytom, Gdynia, and Skwierzyna as further phases are implemented.

Full readiness was preceded by a live missile firing in which a Patriot system destroyed a cruise missile simulant at a distance exceeding 25 kilometers. The engagement was conducted using an operational IBCS command configuration that fused radar data, generated an airspace picture, and supported real-time engagement decisions. Polish officials said this was the first live Patriot firing conducted in this configuration outside the United States.

The Wisła program is Poland’s medium-range air and missile defense effort based on the U.S.-made Patriot system integrated with IBCS. The system is intended to defend critical infrastructure against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and aircraft while ensuring interoperability with NATO forces. Poland announced initial operational readiness of Wisła in December 2024.
