Two MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters have completed their first operational escort of a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile convoy, marking the aircraft’s initial real-world convoy mission within the U.S. Air Force’s nuclear security enterprise.

The mission was conducted on Jan. 8 by the 40th Helicopter Squadron under Air Force Global Strike Command. The helicopters escorted missile maintenance and armored security vehicles to and from a launch facility located more than 100 miles east of Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana. The six-hour movement was completed without refueling, the Air Force said.

Malmstrom Air Force Base is responsible for more than 100 missile launch facilities spread across roughly 13,800 square miles of plains, prairies, and mountain terrain. According to the Air Force, the geography and distances involved place a premium on speed, endurance, and rapid response.

The MH-139 is about 50% faster than the UH-1N Huey it is replacing and can transport twice as many troops while arriving on site sooner, armed, and with enhanced defensive systems. The aircraft is designed to support convoy escort, emergency response, and missile field security operations across remote and austere terrain.

The Jan. 8 convoy escort provided operational data as 20th Air Force moves toward initial operational capability for the Grey Wolf fleet.

The MH-139 program has been underway for several years. Boeing delivered the first MH-139A to the U.S. Air Force on Dec. 19, 2019, at Duke Field, Florida, beginning developmental testing to replace the UH-1N. Malmstrom Air Force Base hosted a welcome ceremony for the aircraft on March 9, 2024, followed by conversion training by the 550th Helicopter Squadron in April. The first Initial Operational Test and Evaluation flight supporting nuclear security operations took place on Jan. 29, 2025.

The MH-139 has been evaluated against scenarios that mirror Malmstrom’s operational demands, including convoy support, rapid emergency response, and launch facility recapture, with a focus on how quickly crews can transition from standby to airborne.

Aircrew involved in the mission cited improved situational awareness during the convoy. Maj. Nicholas Smith, an MH-139 pilot with the 40th Helicopter Squadron, said upgraded Forward Looking Infrared and avionics systems improved coordination with ground forces and command elements.

The transition from the UH-1N Huey to the MH-139A is among the first visible changes in the next phase of the Global Strike mission and is expected to support future integration with the Sentinel ICBM program.
