The U.S. Army has awarded Oshkosh Defense a contract to deliver 97 additional Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles A2 Low-Velocity Airdrop cargo trucks to support airborne sustainment and early-entry logistics.
The award covers both 6×6 and 4×4 cargo variants configured for low-velocity airdrop operations, along with Arctic Kits for operations in extreme-cold and remote environments. The vehicles are intended for use by the Army’s Mobile Brigade Combat Teams operating in contested or infrastructure-limited areas.
The FMTV A2 LVAD Cargo variant enables the direct airdrop of equipment and supplies, reducing reliance on fixed logistics nodes and extending the operational reach of maneuver forces during early and follow-on operations.
Testing of the 6×6 cargo variant began in 2023 and included rollover protection structure validation, rigging exercises, roller loading, and simulated airdrop impact testing. It was the first configuration to complete successful airdrop testing in 2024. The 4×4 cargo variant entered testing in mid-2024 and completed three consecutive airdrops in early 2025 at the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona.
The Army said the award supports its plan to upgrade the existing LVAD fleet through rapid fielding and incremental improvements informed by soldier feedback.
