The Budget Committee of the German Bundestag has approved projects worth €810 million, covering upgrades to the NH90 helicopter, procurement of loitering munitions, additional thermal imaging devices, and participation in the modernization of the Evolved Seasparrow Missile system.

Lawmakers approved a contract to maintain the operational readiness of the sonar system on the NH90 shipborne helicopter, which is deployed on frigates for underwater reconnaissance. A separate contract will fund improvements to the helicopter’s navigation system, as well as its electronic warfare and satellite communication capabilities.

Parliament also endorsed framework agreements with two manufacturers for medium-range loitering munitions, along with training materials and related equipment. The systems can be launched remotely, navigate to a designated area, and engage targets selected by a human operator. They are intended for reconnaissance and engagement units supported by artificial intelligence developed and operated by the German Armed Forces. The first units to receive the systems will be Panzer Brigade 45 in Lithuania.

In addition, the committee approved the procurement of more thermal imaging surveillance devices under an existing framework agreement. The long-range systems are designed for troops operating from dismounted combat vehicles and enable distance measurement, position determination, and target location. The equipment is already in service with the German Armed Forces.

Germany will also take part in the upgrade of the Evolved Seasparrow Missile Block 2 under a project coordinated by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The missile is used to defend ships against air threats. The approved work includes research and development to improve the system, with findings to be applied to existing missiles and ongoing production. Twelve nations are partners in the consortium.
