Anonymous Hacker Group Threatens An ‘All-out Internet Warfare’ Against Malaysia

A hacker group Anonymous Malaysia has threatened an ‘all-out Internet warfare’ against the Malaysian government and called on its Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to resign.

The threat was posted in the form of an eight-minute video posted on 4^th August on its official Facebook page. The threat was made by a figure wearing a Guy Fawkes mask in a synthesized voice, SC Magazine UK reported Wednesday.

The masked man in the video said, “Today we are confronting you, Datuk Seri Haji Mohammad Najib Bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak to declare a duel and challenge.” The video declared an “all-out Internet warfare” towards the Malaysian Anti-corruption Commission (MACC), police and 150 web portals that it said it had “strategically” selected.

The group warned that a cyber-attack would be carried out during the Bersih 4.0 demonstrations on 29 August to 30 August from 6pm to 5pm. Bersih (Clean) is a Coalition of non-governmental organizations campaigning for clean and fair elections and reform of Malaysia's current electoral system.

Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah however condemned the hacker group and rejected any association with Anonymous Malaysia, calling on police to investigate the hacker group's warning.

The Anonymous video speaker added: “We are also calling for International Anonymous to join us, as to give a hand to all Malaysians to show our internet warfare.”

The Prime Minister was accused of putting the country in a downward spiral and was blamed for the poor economy, increased corruption, as well as failure to respond to, or being complicit in other issues in recent months.

In response to the threats Malaysia's Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Madius Tangau is reported by AsiaOne as saying that security specialists CyberSecurity Malaysia and Mimos Bhd are now proactive measures such as seeking and fixing vulnerabilities and running remediation drills to protect the information networks of ten public sector agencies including defense and security; banking and finance; information and communications; energy; water; transportation; health and emergency services plus food and agriculture.

Mimos, the national ICT (information and communications technology) research and development agency, is to provide advanced security technologies for the operation, and the agencies have been told to upgrade and patch their software.
