Saab’s Autonomous Swarm technology Tested as part of AUKUS Trial

Saab’s Autonomous Swarm technology was showcased in Project Convergence 2024 in the U.S., with a UK team demonstrating AI-driven interoperability in UAS swarms.

The month-long trial under the Australia-UK,US (AUKUS) partnership also involved Saab’s BlueBear and UK MOD’s Dstl.

In AUKUS trials, BlueBear’s RedKite and Ghost UAS, integrated with the Centurion system, enabled rapid retraining and deployment of AI algorithms, allowing UAS swarms to operate complex payloads autonomously and adapt to changing mission parameters.

The AI-driven Centurion system allowed a single operator to control diverse UAS swarms, while BlueBear’s technology enabled the ‘hot-swapping’ of AI from any supplier, unlocking the full potential of networked sensors and effectors in multi-domain warfare.

“The AUKUS trials enhance our interoperability with allied nations and mature critical technologies for modern warfare,” says Andy Fraser, Group Managing Director, Saab UK.

The trial marked the culmination of over two decades of Dstl-funded autonomy work. Saab acquired BlueBear in August 2023 to accelerate innovation across its portfolio.
