Italy has approved the sale of Piaggio Aerospace to Turkish unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) manufacturer Baykar.
Baykar secured the acquisition after outbidding international rivals in a competitive tender process. The approval was granted by Italy’s Ministry of Enterprises.
Piaggio Aerospace, established in 1884, is known for its P.180 Avanti business jets and aircraft engines, and is a key player in Italy’s defense sector, providing maintenance, repair, and overhaul services.
Italian Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, emphasized that Piaggio’s relaunch, under Baykar’s leadership, comes with a long-term production strategy, ensuring the company’s future and preserving its workforce. This acquisition aligns with Baykar's vision to expand its influence in the European aviation market while maintaining Piaggio’s legacy.
Baykar dominates nearly 60% of the global UCAV export market, with revenues exceeding 90% from international sales. In 2023, Baykar ranked among Turkey's top 10 exporters, with $1.8 billion in exports, further cementing its role as a leader in aviation innovation.
