Saab has launched HMS Halland, the third and final Gotland-class submarine after completing its mid-life upgrade (MLU) for the Swedish Navy.
In a statement on February 13, 2025, Saab announced that the submarine had been floated out at its Karlskrona shipyard following extensive modernization efforts.
The upgrade incorporates advanced technologies and systems that will also be integrated into Sweden’s next-generation Blekinge-class (A26) submarines.
As part of the overhaul, more than 20 key systems on HMS Halland were replaced, including sensors and command systems.
These enhancements align the vessel’s capabilities with those of the Blekinge-class submarines.
With this upgrade, HMS Halland joins its sister submarines, HMS Gotland and HMS Uppland, both of which previously underwent similar modifications.
"The successful launch of HMS Halland highlights Saab’s expertise in upgrading and delivering advanced submarines that meet the Swedish Navy’s operational needs. This development strengthens Sweden’s naval defenses and contributes to NATO’s security in the Baltic region," stated Mats Wicksell, Head of Saab's Business Area Kockums.
